Best DPS depends on the fight in front of you. A leveled, correctly typed Pal that does not overkill catch targets beats a tier-list name you cannot field yet.
Why copied tier lists fail mid-save
- You may not have the species yet.
- Your passives may be worse than a “B-tier” Pal you already leveled.
- This week’s Tower/region wants a different element than last week’s meta screenshot.
- A glass cannon that dies every 8 seconds loses to a sturdier second-best option.
DPS selection framework
- Role: single-target bossing vs pack clearing
- Element: matches the content you are doing this week
- Moveset: reliable damage without constant whiffs
- Survivability: dead DPS is 0 DPS
- Investment ceiling: worth breeding / Awakening in 1.0?
Role templates
| Role | Wants | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Boss breaker | High single-target, correct element, ATK passives | Random utility mounts in the DPS slots |
| Camp clearer | AoE, mobility, “good enough” defense | Ultra-specialized bosses-only kits |
| Capture chipper | Controlled damage, status tools | Hard-hitting execute skills |
Team DPS vs mascot DPS
One overleveled legend carrying three underleveled pets creates brittle clears. Aim for a coherent core:
- Primary breaker
- Secondary breaker / coverage
- Flex answer to today’s boss
Use the combat guide to keep Partner Skills intentional during burst windows.
Passive priorities for fighters
- Attack-oriented passives for pure damage dealers
- Mixed defense for pals that must stay deployed in messy arenas
- Avoid work-only passives on dedicated boss killers
- Speed-related passives can matter for uptime and repositioning, but don’t worship them over raw viable damage if your clear is already slow
Level, gear, and player contribution
Pal DPS is multiplied by your weapon tier and focus fire. If your character is still swinging starter-tier tools into endgame packs, fix player gear before sacrificing another evening to breeding. Likewise, food uptime is silent DPS—starving teams parse terribly.
Investment rules in the 1.0 era
- Prove the Pal on real content for several sessions.
- Breed toward keeper passives.
- Then spend rare Awakening/Mutation-style resources.
Full detail sits in the Awakening & Mutation guide.
When to replace a DPS Pal
- You entered a new element meta for the next Tower/region
- Breeding produced the same species with clearly better passives
- Clear timers stall even with correct gear and food
- The Pal’s job was travel all along and you were forcing it to be a boss tip
Practical weekly DPS agenda
- Pick the next gate (Tower, regional elite, hard camp chain)
- Build a specialized party for that gate
- Run it until clear feels repeatable
- Only then start a genetics project to “permanentize” the winner
